Emma has sworn off love.

After all, it is pointless to subject oneself to such torture when in the end, heartbreak is inevitable. Just like her sister had suffered. So, when Lord Daventry, the muddy brown-eyed boy from her childhood, returns to society she refuses to even look at him... well, maybe she'll look once.

Or twice.

But only because his eyes have changed into the most decadent color of dark chocolate. And his tanned skin from his travels is distracting, especially paired with his wide and devilish grin.

The stirring of her blood from his hot whisper in her ear is nothing... at least that's what she tells herself.

Lord Daventry has one response to marriage. Drink Brandy. Especially when his mother decides it is time for him to produce an heir. Reluctantly, he attends his first ball since returning from India, swearing to head to White's shortly after the first dance. However, he is pleasantly surprised to discover that Miss Emma Kingsly, the same girl he tried to kiss when she was nine, is still unmarried.

Her frigid demeanor should have warned him off... but unable to ignore a challenge, he plunges in head first... never expecting to fall in love with the one woman in the ton completely set against marriage.

To Refuse A Rake edition by Kristin Vayden Laura Heritage Literature Fiction eBooks

I found this book to be a fun easy read. Kristin does a great job of building her characters and the world around them as well as adding in a dash of humor which I found to be refreshing. I will be looking forward to reading more books by this author in the future.

At the beginning of the book we get a small peek at Emma and Hudson as children during an incident with a kiss that would stay in both of their minds for all the years to come. As we move into the future and see our characters as adults we find that not much has changed and that Hudson will once again find himself wanting a kiss.

Emma has grown into a beautiful young woman, with her greatest flaw being that she has completely sworn off the idea of marriage due to a series of unfortunate events that plagued her sister's love life and in Emma's mind, proved that marriage isn't worth the heart break.

While Emma's heart was turning cold against love, Hudson was out traveling the world and quite enjoying his stance as a rake. When he does return home, he finds himself shocked at the beauty of Emma, and dismayed at her new stance on life.

It will be up to Hudson to come to understand what has made Emma who she is, and that patience is something he will need a lot of if he is to ever claim that kiss from long ago. Together will they be able to overcome the situations surrounding them so that Hudson can teach Emma, that it's okay to open your heart because love is always worth the risk.

To Refuse A Rake edition by Kristin Vayden Laura Heritage Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I really liked the characters. If an author can give me a sense of caring about the characters then they have won me over. This book had that. I loved the clever witty banter between the two. It was as if you were privy to these two winding up together because you just wanted them to. I also liked the development of the secondary characters. They were fn and original.
If you are looking for a spirited female lead who will leave you wanting to know what she is going to do next, this is the book for you. The only complaint that I have is it seemed the male lead went from never wanting to get married, and suddenly he was chasing her to get her to be his wife. I would have expected to see more of an internal struggle. Also, I felt the situation with the leads sister and what happened between her husband and the leads brother was left out there. That part felt like you never knew what really happened. The characters didn't even understand it
I really enjoyed Hudson and Emma's story. It is a sweet, uncomplicated, clean romance (albeit it does have a lot of sensuality). Emma and Hudson are childhood friends.

The story begins with a Prologue where a 9 year old Emma has refused to give 13 year old Hudson a kiss. He feels rejected, but tells her that one of these days she will regret her refusal!

Fast forward about 11 or 12 years later, Hudson has just returned from extensive travels to India because he has now inherited his father's title of Earl of Daventry. Emma is a diamond of the first water, but refuses to marry because of the hurt her sister suffered in her own marriage. Emma and her sister Sadie are extremely close. Sadie married for love, but was later bitterly betrayed by her husband, who has since died. There was a bit of a scandal surrounding Sadie's marriage which resulted in her being given the cut by the ton for a while, but where we begin our story that has apparently since been resolved.

I agree with the other reviewer who said that more detail about the scandal surrounding Sadie's marriage would have added depth to the story, since this event had such a profound impact on Emma's views regarding love and marriage.

As soon as Hudson and Emma become reacquainted sparks begin to fly. Hudson was always a bit of a thorn in Emma's side when they were children and nothing has changed since then. Hudson is extremely attracted to Emma. He has absolutely not gotten over his childhood crush on Emma. Almost immediately he decides he wants her for himself.

The rest of the story follows Hudson's attempts to win Emma's affection. The story is straightforward and uncomplicated. There is no competition for either Hudson's or Emma's affection, no intrigue, no bad guys, and no misunderstandings between the parties. Depending on what you are in the mood for this story could actually be pretty boring. I, however, found it quite entertaining.

The book could use some editing and, IMHO, the author overused the words allure and alluring. Furthermore, there was quite a bit of winking, saucy grins, and smirks....maybe a bit too much.

Overall I would say this book is a very entertaining read. If you're in the mood for a nice, easy, fairly clean romance you might want to give this book a try. I say "fairly" clean because there were quite a few sensual kisses and touches between the hero and heroine. However, even the scene where the hero and heroine consummated their marriage was not in the least graphic.
The prologue of this story was so cute that I had high hopes for the rest of their story. However, as decent a story as it was it isn't one that I will remember for long. There is a definite history between Hudson and Emma that should have kept my interest - however the constant reference of his either "chocolate" eyes or his "muddy brown" eyes reached the point where I found myself rolling my eyes whenever either was mentioned (which was frequently unfortunately).

Also, I wish there had been more of a story regarding the "scandal" and "hurt" that Emma's sister suffered so that we may have been better able to understand her reluctance to marry. There was next to nothing to go on which made it hard to relate to Emma and her feelings on the subject of matrimony.

On the whole, I am sure there are numerous people to whom this story will appeal (the five star ratings alone speak to this). However, while I will definitely give this author another chance, this isn't a story that I will be keeping on my kindle.
